How much does it cost to start a supplement brand in Malaysia?

By Athena Health Technologies · Updated

It depends mostly on two things: the format you choose and the size of your first order. The main costs are formula development and samples, packaging and design, approvals for your product's route, and the first production run. Formats that need NPRA registration, such as capsules, usually take longer and cost more to launch than food formats such as drinks.

What you pay for

  1. Formula and samples. Building a recipe for your format and making samples you can taste and test.
  2. Packaging. Bottles, droppers, sachets or boxes, plus label and pack design. Small first orders cost more per unit.
  3. Approvals. Depends on the route your product follows (see Does my product need NPRA registration?). Food products need a compliant label; health supplements need NPRA registration, and adverts with claims need approval from the Medicine Advertisements Board, which charges per application.
  4. First production run. The biggest single cost. It depends on the minimum order for your format.
  5. Launch. Marketplace fees, photography and content. These are yours, but plan for them from the start.

What changes the total

  • Format. Drops and drinks are usually quicker to launch as food. Capsules and tablets usually need registration as a health supplement first.
  • Order size. Larger runs lower the cost per unit but raise the cash you need up front.
  • Custom or ready formula. A formula built only for you takes longer than one adapted from an existing base.

Our numbers

Our minimum order is 1,000 units per format, and first stock takes about 3 to 4 months from an agreed brief, depending on quantity. We give you a price after a first call about your product.
